European deputy complains about alleged campaign against President Chávez

Willy Meyer Pleite, a Spanish politician and member of the European Parliament with the Izquierda Unida (United Left), claimed Thursday in a press release that the European right-wing and the opposition to Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez have launched a "manipulation campaign" in the face of the election for president next December 3rd, Efe reported.

Representatives of the political parties that support single opposition candidate Manuel Rosales met Wednesday with the leader of conservative European People's Party Hans Gert Poettering, and Jaime Mayor Oreja, the speaker of the Spanish delegation.

Meyer considered that the fact that the opposition members approached "exclusively" the right-wing shows "an internationally coordinated strategy to disturb bilateral relations and seek support for the international community in order not to acknowledge the potential victory of President Chávez."

In addition, Meyer, who will take part in the delegation of the European Parliament that will observe the election, rebutted criticism from opposition representatives concerning alleged abuse of the Government advantageous position to cash in on the presidential campaign.
