Venezuelan TV – this is not as ridiculous as it seems
Readers of this site and those interested in Venezuela will probably know that the government has taken the decision not to renew the broadcast license of RCTV from May 27th 2007. This means that RCTV cannot use the airwaves which belong to the Venezuelan state and people but can still broadcast on cable and satellite.
The head of RCTV, Marcel Granier, has been an outspoken critic of the Chavez government and his station actively participated in the April 2002 coup, as well as the oil industry sabotage in December of the same year.
We are publishing this article written by well known humorist Roberto Malaver suitably entitled “TV Marcel”. This is nearer the truth than many living outside of Venezuela would like to believe. In fact, it’s frightening and reflects Marcel Granier’s “view of the world” and modern day Venezuela.
TV Marcel
It’s May 27th, nine at night, and on RCTV’s screen is Marcel Granier. He has a piece of paper in his hand and you can hear the jingle of the station in the background. Marcel is waiting for the signal of a producer behind the camera and when it is given, Marcel begins:
-People of Venezuela, friends all. Tonight we bid our farewell to you because the tyrant, Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Chavez Frias, has decided to take away from you the opportunity to be well informed, to enjoy yourselves, to be educated and entertained with our programming. This is a clear violation of press freedom, freedom of information, freedom of enterprise, a violation of human rights, in fact a violations of all liberties.
We want to inform you that we are leaving but we are going with pride, and we invite you to see us on cable, to see our new channel, TV Marcel. For this reason we want to let you know about our programming.
