Justice on the march – Part 2

For readers interested in knowing who were the “opposition democrats” who,  on April 12th 2002, signed the dictator-for-a-day Pedro Carmona’s decree after the coup d’état, we are publishing the full list of names. The decree abolished the 1999 Bolivarian Constitution along with all public institutions and it is in international public interest to publish the full list of the fascist coup supporters. The people named represent the old guard of the 4th Republic (1958 – 1998) and in many cases are still the crème de la crème of Venezuelan society.

The reason for signing the Carmona decree and the presence of these unelected representatives of the high bourgeoisie in Miraflores Palace on that day is being investigated by the Attorney General’s office. The charge leveled at these “democrats” is high treason which carries a maximum jail sentence of 24 years under the Venezuelan penal code.

The cleaning out of corrupt judges and the new configuration of the National assembly will ensure that the snail’s pace justice in Venezuela should be accelerated in 2006 and that these traitors to their own country will be brought to book.

Can you imagine what the situation would be in the UK in similar circumstances? The criminal court at the Old Bailey would have already dispatched such people to Dartmoor, Wormwood Scrubs or Manchester Prison (formerly known as Strangeways) to serve long sentences. In fact, even though the death penalty for first degree murder was abolished in the UK in 1956, it still exists for acts of high treason. Venezuela was the first Latin American country to abolish capital punishment in 1899.
